IASARC Certification Program Framework Completed – Advancing Global SAR Standards

The International Association of Search and Rescue Coordinators (IASARC) is proud to announce the completion of its Certification Program Framework, marking a significant step forward in the professionalization and standardization of Search and Rescue (SAR) coordination worldwide. Developed by leading SAR Coordination experts from France, New Zealand, Australia, the U.K., and the U.S., this Framework is both rigorous and internationally applicable.

Designed to elevate competencies across maritime, aeronautical, and land SAR operations, the framework provides structured certification pathways for:

  • SAR Administrators

  • Search and Rescue Mission Coordinators (SMCs)

  • On-Scene Coordinators

  • SAR Communicators and Dispatchers

This initiative is fully compliant with ISO/IEC 17024, and aligns with key international standards, including IMO IAMSAR, IMO Model Courses, ICAO provisions, and other relevant global conventions and regulations.

Our goal is to foster international recognition of SAR professionalism and to ensure that personnel at all levels are equipped with validated, high-quality training and assessment.

Next Steps: IASARC is refining the assessment and examination processes in preparation for the maritime and aeronautical SAR coordination certification pilot projected for 2026.

We extend our gratitude to all contributors and stakeholders who have supported this initiative. In particular, we’d like to thank the dedicated individuals who labored diligently on nights and weekends to advance this endeavor - Mr. Doug Samp of the U.S. Coast Guard, Mr. Joseph Zeller of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, Sergeant Pete Comer of the Auckland, New Zealand Police, Mr. David Poudevigne, Head of the French Mission Control Centre, and Mr. Dave Morris of His Majesty’s Coastguard and VP for Certifications at IASARC

IASARC: Advancing the Profession of SAR Coordination

At IASARC, we exist to professionalize and strengthen this life-saving function. Through rigorous certification programs, international partnerships, and scientific advancement, we work to ensure that the people coordinating these missions are as prepared and empowered as those on the front lines.
